The operational value of your school gym therefore depends on how much of the timetable it can serve and how quickly it can be returned to teaching after another use. During PE lessons, the floor must respond predictably as pupils run, turn and land in barefoot or gym trainers, while it must also be tough enough to withstand the movements of chairs, desks, temporary stage blocks, and outdoor shoes when required.
So how do you specify one resin or polyurethane flooring system that works for all of it?
Let the busiest uses carry the most weight
A list of activities only takes us so far when choosing a resin flooring system. To make sound decisions about the floor, you also need to know which sports occupy most of the timetable, the level at which they are played and how often the gym is converted for something else. A sport taught throughout the week should naturally carry more weight in the specification than an occasional booking.
This is the programme-led approach recommended in Sport England’s Floors for Indoor Sports guidance. In practice, it allows you to set clear priorities for playing performance, court markings and how the floor will be protected during non-sport use.
Make the line plan easy to live with
Several sports on one floor can produce a confusing number of intersecting lines. A clear colour hierarchy gives the courts used most often the strongest contrast against the background, while keeping secondary markings distinct enough for pupils, teachers and officials to follow.
It is worth approving the complete line drawing before installation, including court orientation, margins and its relationship with fixed equipment – rather than dealing with this only after the floor is laid. Once agreed, the markings can be incorporated into the finished resin surface. Teachers can then move between scheduled sports without measuring and temporarily marking the same routine court layouts.
Look beyond the colour of the surface
Colour and markings may be what you notice first, but the way the floor behaves comes from the complete construction. In a sports-grade polyurethane flooring system, the applied surface works with a resilient layer beneath it. Together, they determine how much the floor deflects under load, how much force it returns to a pupil and how a ball rebounds.
The surface also needs enough friction for running and turning without restricting the controlled foot movements required by sports such as squash, netball, and indoor football. BS EN 14904 provides test methods for these characteristics in indoor multi-sport surfaces. When you compare flooring options, ask to see the BS EN 14904 test results for the exact floor build-up being proposed, not simply a product sheet for the polyurethane surface. Those results should show how the resilient layer and finished surface perform together for force reduction, deformation, friction and ball bounce, allowing you to compare each option on the same terms.
Move between uses with less preparation
When the resin flooring system is specified for the full range of activities taking place in your gym, your staff should not need to cover the entire floor with temporary boards or coverings before every examination, assembly or school event. The impact and abrasion resistance of polyurethane flooring allows the surface to accommodate routine furniture movement, outdoor footwear and wheeled equipment as part of its everyday use.
Once the room has been cleared, the seamless surface can simply be swept and cleaned without dirt collecting in joints between flooring sections. Its resistance to scuffs and stains also reduces the remedial work needed before the gym returns to PE. This shortens the changeover and removes the labour and storage associated with laying a separate protective floor for routine events.
